Skin Cancer Reconstruction
Skin cancer is the most common malignant tumor, and typically is the result of excessive exposure to sunlight. Several treatment options are available, and depend on the size and location of the tumor. Complete removal of the tumor may involve creation of a substantial defect that could require reconstructive surgery to achieve the best cosmetic result.
Procedure Description
The best method for reconstruction is determined on an individual basis after the size of the defect is defined. A scar will be present at the site of the removal, although every attempt is made to keep these effects minimal. Occasionally two or more surgeries may be necessary to get the best cosmetic outcome.
Recovery
You can expect mild postoperative pain and swelling after reconstruction. Typically swelling is at its maximum on the third day after surgery and then slowly improves. Sutures are removed around postoperative day 5 to 7. You can expect to return to work approximately 7 to 10 days after surgery. Scar remodeling and refinement may take 6 months to one year for healing to be complete and to achieve your final result.
