Injectable Submental Fat Treatment
Have you been struggling to reduce the size of a double chin? Stubborn submental fat along the underside of the chin is a common problem for many men and women–even despite healthy diet and exercise. While facial liposuction can be an effective option to sculpt this lower portion of the face, many of our patients come to our Seattle plastic surgery practice looking for a less-invasive option. For this, we recommend Kybella.

What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-surgical way to reduce problem fat cells that can often linger beneath the chin and jawline–sometimes giving off the appearance of a “double chin.” This injectable procedure uses an active ingredient known as deoxycholic acid, which is FDA approved for the treatment of submental fat cells. Once injected beneath the skin, the deoxycholic acid causes the targeted fat cells to deactivate and ultimately be flushed from your body. The end result is a slimmer, well-contoured facial profile and chin.
How does Kybella treat excess chin fat?
This injectable fat reduction treatment is performed in-office at the Larrabee Center for Plastic Surgery in Seattle. Dr’s. Wayne Larrabee will carefully analyze your current condition and listen to your expectations to help determine if Kybella is right for you. Alternative treatments include facial liposuction, with which Dr’s. Larrabee can also help achieve natural-looking outcomes.
During your Kybella treatment, our nurse injectors will mark the targeted injection sites beneath the chin using a specially designed template. This will ensure an even and natural-looking reduction of the unwanted fat. With each injection, a small amount of Kybella will be administered into the underlying fat cells, causing them to gradually “shut off” and be naturally flushed from your body.
Dr’s. Larrabee often recommend a series of multiple Kybella treatment sessions to achieve optimal results. This will be based on the amount of fat you are looking to treat, as well as your desired outcome.

What are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are neuromodulators that relax wrinkles and lines by preventing the muscular contractions that cause them. Your facial muscles contract every time you smile, laugh, frown, furrow your brow, or make any facial movements. You make these movements many times every day. After years of repeating them over and over, you can develop wrinkles.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® ensure those contractions can’t happen. They’re caused when your brain sends a signal via nerves that tells the muscles what to do. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® block that signal. Your brain still sends it, but it never reaches your nerves. That relaxes your muscles and rids your face of the targeted wrinkles.
During your consultation at the Larrabee Center, we will analyze your face for excessive movement and pulling of muscle groups that cause your wrinkles. We will also look at skin volume loss that occurs as a result of genetics and time. Our goal is to give your face a softened, refreshed, relaxed look.
What Can BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® Treat?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are effective at treating many cosmetic facial conditions, including:
- Lines between the eyebrows
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Brow lines
What are the Differences Between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®?
Although BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® use the same active substance and have the same effects, there are subtle differences that can impact the results you get. Dysport® has smaller protein molecules than BOTOX® Cosmetic. That means Dysport® may diffuse over a wider area. That can manifest in several ways:
- Dysport® can sometimes be more effective in treating larger areas, like your forehead, whereas BOTOX® Cosmetic can target more specific points, like crow’s feet and frown lines.
- Dysport® may take effect slightly sooner. That means it may be preferable if time is of the essence.
- The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®last similar lengths of time. Some people feel BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts slightly longer, although this usually depends on the amounts used and sites treated.
Are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® Safe?
They’re both safe. They are the purified derivative of Botulinum Toxin Type A. Before they’re injected, they’re mixed with saline, and they’re administered in tiny amounts that deliver safe, effective cosmetic results.
The injectables are also non-invasive and non-surgical. They involve no anesthesia, incisions, sutures, or stitches. Your treatment should last no longer than 15 minutes, and you should experience no downtime.
Are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® Permanent?
Results from both treatments should last about four months, so you’ll need regular treatments to keep your wrinkles from showing back up. However, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® become more effective with each successive treatment. The wrinkles are less pronounced each time they come back.
If you have wrinkles that BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® may not treat, you can also opt for additional treatments, such as dermal fillers, that can be used in concert with the injectables to help your face look as youthful as possible.

Restore Facial Volume with Injectable Soft-Tissue Fillers
Here at the Larrabee Center, we employ a variety of different hyaluronic acid facial fillers, so our patients can enjoy the benefits of a full array of products–each of which excels in its unique purpose. Some, such as Belotero, Juvéderm, and Restylane, are incredibly effective when it comes to treating wrinkles of various skin depths while thicker fillers, like Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft, have proven invaluable at restoring lift and plumping the cheeks.
Let’s take a quick look at the fillers our doctors recommend and the benefits of each.
One of the most popular fillers available today, Juvéderm® is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. HA is found naturally in the body and is useful in helping to restore skin structure and maintaining a supple appearance and feel. Not only does it provide great results, but Juvéderm is completely safe, with minimal side effects.
Benefits of Juvéderm:
- Effectively smoothes out sagging skin
- Helps limit laugh lines and reduce deep folds
- Successfully augments thin lips
- Is excellent at restoring volume to the cheeks
Also a HA filler, part of what sets Juvéderm Voluma™ apart is that while many other fillers require a period of months before they take full effect, the positive results of Voluma can be seen right away. Voluma is the only filler approved by the FDA for adding volume to the cheeks.
Add volume instantly to all regions of the cheek:
The positive effects of a single treatment of Juvéderm Voluma™ can last as long as two years.
Developed using Vycross® technology, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® allows for a lower concentration of HA to be used, which results in less swelling. Not only is there less downtime, the treatment itself is made as pain-free as possible by the built-in lidocaine anaesthetic. It is the first and only FDA-approved filler proven to increase lip fullness and correct perioral lines for up to one year.
What Juvéderm ® Volbella ® lip injections can do for you:
- Diminish vertical lip lines (aka smoker’s lines)
- Accentuate the border of your lips
- Plump up your lips to make them fuller
- Enhance the cupid’s bow (the “M” part of your mid-upper lip)
Juvéderm Vollure™ XC
Introducing the newest member of the popular Juvéderm hyaluronic acid filler family. Vollure is an excellent option for softening the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, helping to restore a younger, smoother appearance of the skin.
Vollure is great for:
- Treating parentheses lines or folds around the nose and mouth (nasolabial fold)
- Softening marionette lines
- Providing long-lasting results up to 18 months (individual patient results may vary)
This is one of the newer fillers on the market to gain FDA approval for wrinkle treatment. Excellent at treating fine lines because its active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is thinner than the HA found in many other fillers, Belotero Balance® is particularly useful for the treatment of:
- The thin, fine lines that occur under (and between) the eyes
- The fine lines that develop around the mouth
- Superficial wrinkles (ones that develop close to the surface of the skin)
Radiesse® is a “stimulatory filler,” which means that it stimulates growth of new collagen in the body. In fact, not only does it help the body produce its own, natural collagen, but over time it gets metabolized by the body, such that all it leaves behind is the natural substance your face needs to stay fresh. Radiesse is incredibly good at rejuvenating specific facial features. We use it to:
- Eliminate wrinkles
- Lessen severe lines
- Create a crisp jaw line
- Alleviate sunken temples
- Restore volume to cheekbones
- Give you a clean, defined profile
As an injectable gel, Restylane L® is highly effective at adding youthful volume and clean contours to your face. One of the chief benefits of Restylane is that it brings you positive effects that you’ll notice right away, regardless of whether it’s been used to treat wrinkles, restore volume, or bring fullness back to the lips.
Restylane is ideally suited for:
- Rejuvenating laugh lines
- Treating marionette lines
- Adding enhancing volume to both the upper and lower lips
- Filling in lipstick lines
Because it’s a formulation of hyaluronic acid (HA) that’s designed to act in synch with the HA that’s naturally present in your body, Restylane Lyft® is tremendously good at restoring and maintaining high levels of skin suppleness and structure.
At the Larrabee Center, we employ Restylane Lyft to:
- Eliminate smile lines
- Add volume to temple hollows and under-eye hollows
- Bring lift to sunken cheeks
- Treat marionette lines
Sculptra® has certainly earned its spot on the list of fillers that Dr. Larrabee recommends to his patients, and he uses it with tremendous success. It’s important to note, though, that Sculptra isn’t a “filler” in the same sense as many others. Instead of adding new volume directly to the treated area, Sculptra works by stimulating the production of new collagen in your body, and it’s this new, natural collagen that is responsible for the subsequent increase in volume.
Sculptra works to produce new volume and definition in:
- Sunken cheeks
- Temple hollows
- Hollows under the eyes
- The chin
- The jaw line
- Smile lines
