The most common question patients ask when they learn about Daxxify is simple: how much longer does it actually last than Botox? The short answer is roughly twice as long. The longer answer — what drives that difference, who benefits most, and whether the longer duration is worth it for you — is what this article is for.

How They Work: The Same Mechanism, Different Formulations
Both Botox and Daxxify are botulinum toxin type A products. They work by temporarily blocking the neuromuscular junction — the point where a nerve signal meets a muscle — preventing the muscle from contracting. With the targeted muscle at rest, the overlying skin smooths and dynamic wrinkles soften.
The mechanism is identical. The difference is in the stabilizer used during manufacturing.
Botox (and Dysport)
Botox uses human serum albumin — a naturally occurring blood protein — as a stabilizing molecule. It received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002 (though it has been used medically since 1989) and has one of the longest safety records of any injectable in medicine. Dysport uses the same stabilizer with a slightly different molecular structure, giving it a wider diffusion pattern that some providers prefer for larger treatment areas like the forehead.
Daxxify
Daxxify, approved by the FDA in 2022, uses a proprietary peptide called RTP004 as its stabilizer instead of human serum albumin. Revance Therapeutics developed the peptide specifically to extend the interaction between the toxin and the acetylcholine receptor — which is the leading hypothesis for why Daxxify lasts longer. It is the first botulinum toxin to use a peptide stabilizer and the first to be entirely free of human or animal-derived proteins.
How Long Each Lasts
Botox & Dysport: 3–4 months
For most patients, Botox and Dysport results become visible within 3–7 days and reach their peak at 2 weeks. The smoothing effect then maintains for approximately 3–4 months, gradually fading as the nerve-muscle connection rebuilds. With regular maintenance, some patients find their results extend over time — the muscles weaken with consistent treatment, so less product is needed less frequently.
Daxxify: up to 6 months
Clinical trial data for Daxxify showed a median duration of approximately 6 months in the pivotal SAKURA trials for glabellar (frown) lines. Some patients maintained results for up to 9 months. At 6 months, approximately half of patients still had little to no frown lines. This is a meaningful difference — it translates to 2 treatments per year instead of 3–4 for many patients.
Important: ‘Up to 6 months’ is the clinical median, not a guarantee. Results vary based on the individual’s metabolism, the dose used, and the treatment area. Your first Daxxify treatment will give you the best data on how your body responds.
Cost: What Longer Duration Actually Means for Your Budget
Daxxify is typically priced higher per treatment than Botox — partly because its manufacturing process is more complex, and partly because the product is newer. However, the cost-per-month math often levels the playing field:
- 3 Botox treatments per year at X per treatment = 3X annually
- 2 Daxxify treatments per year at 1.3X per treatment = 2.6X annually
The exact numbers depend on the per-unit price at your clinic and how many units you need. The point is that per-visit price is only one variable — total annual cost may be similar, and for patients who find scheduling appointments inconvenient, the reduced frequency alone can be worth the difference.

Which Is Right for You?
Neither product is universally ‘better.’ The right choice depends on your priorities:
Choose Botox or Dysport if:
- You want the longest track record and most extensive real-world safety data
- You see your provider frequently for other treatments and scheduling 3–4 times per year is easy
- You are new to neurotoxins and want to start with the most well-established option
- Your provider recommends it based on your specific treatment area or muscle characteristics
Choose Daxxify if:
- You want to reduce the number of appointments per year
- Your results from Botox or Dysport wear off faster than average (metabolizers)
- You prefer a human-serum-albumin-free formulation
- Your provider recommends it for your treatment pattern
Many patients alternate or use Daxxify for some treatments and Botox for others. The best approach is a conversation with your injector, who can factor in your specific muscle anatomy, how your body has historically metabolized neurotoxins, and your schedule preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Daxxify better than Botox?
‘Better’ depends on your priorities. Daxxify lasts longer — a genuine advantage if fewer annual appointments matter to you. Botox has a longer track record and broader clinical data. Both are excellent when administered by a skilled injector.
Can I switch from Botox to Daxxify?
Yes. Most providers recommend waiting until your current Botox has fully worn off before starting Daxxify. At your consultation, your injector will time the transition appropriately.
Does Daxxify look different from Botox?
No — both products relax the same muscles using the same mechanism. The result should look identical; the difference is in how long it lasts.
Is Daxxify available in Seattle?
Yes. Daxxify is offered at The Larrabee Center in both Seattle (600 Broadway Suite 280) and Kirkland (10220 NE Points Dr. Suite 110). Book a consultation at (206) 386-3550.
Can Daxxify be combined with fillers?
Yes — neurotoxins and dermal fillers address different concerns and are routinely combined in the same session.
Curious which neurotoxin is the better fit for your schedule and goals?
Book a complimentary consultation at The Larrabee Center. Your provider will review your history, assess your muscles, and recommend the right product and dosing for you — whether that’s Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, or a combination.
